MODEL TRADE UNION MOTION

 

This meeting notes:

 

1. Abortion in Scotland is only available if you meet the requirements of the Abortion Act 1967.

2. This means that you cannot make your own pregnancy decision, unless you have the permission of 2 doctors. 

3. You could be prosecuted and even jailed if you don’t meet the criteria of the Abortion Act.

4. Politicians can change the Abortion Act and make it more difficult or even illegal to get an abortion. We have already seen this in other countries, like the USA. Some politicians here would like to limit abortion further.

 

This meeting believes:

 

1.    It’s time to protect our future freedom to choose abortion

2.    It’s time to take our decisions away from the hands of law-makers and politicians

3.    It’s time for our pregnancy decisions to be private between ourselves and our doctors and nurses.

4.    It’s time for abortion to be regulated as healthcare in line with STUC policy. (Which is also supported by the British Medical Association, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Royal College of Midwives)

5.    It’s time to protect NHS abortion services, no cuts, no outsourcing, no privatisation

 

This meeting resolves:

 

1. To campaign among our members for the above policy.

2. To support pro-choice rallies and publicise these among our members and bring delegations with union banners if possible.

3. To affiliate to Abortion Rights Scotland - at a cost of £40.
